High Energy Neutrino Astrophysics

چکیده
The observation of neutrinos is an experimental challenge due to their weak interactions that makes them elusive particles. Though they are difficult to detect, they are excellent probes to observe the most distant sources and their interior. Until now only MeV extra-terrestrial neutrinos have been observed from the Sun and SN1987A. Nevertheless there is growing activity to build detectors for high energy (& 1 TeV) neutrinos of astrophysical origin: their detection would allow the observation of the horizon not accessible to the well-established γ-astronomy. In Sec. 2 the scientific objectives of ν astrophysics and the connection to the observation of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) are introduced. The complementarity between γ and ν-astrophysics is pointed out and typical models for ν production are considered. The working principle of Neutrino Telescopes (NTs) exploiting the Cherenkov light detection in the South Pole ice or in sea/lake depths is summarized in Sec. 3. Detector performances, event topologies and background rejection methods are considered. In Sec. 4 the current status of Cherenkov NTs is reviewed, while in Sec. 5 other techniques are considered.

Neutrino physics and astrophysics with the MACRO detector
After a brief presentation of the MACRO detector we discuss the data on atmospheric neutrinos and neutrino oscillations, on high energy (Eν > 1 GeV) neutrino astronomy, on indirect searches for WIMPs and low energy (Eν > ∼ 7 MeV) stellar collapse neutrinos.
متن کاملDumand and Amanda: High Energy Neutrino Astrophysics
The eld of high energy neutrino astrophysics is entering an exciting new phase as two, new, large-scale observatories prepare to come on line. Both DUMAND (Deep Underwater Muon and Neutrino Detector) and AMANDA (Antarctic Muon and Neutrino Detector) had major deployment e orts in December 1993{January 1994. Results were mixed, with both projects making substantial progress, but encountering set...
متن کامل. H E ] 1 5 Ju n 20 09 High - Energy Astrophysics with Neutrino Telescopes
Neutrino astrophysics offers new perspectives on Universe investigation: high energy neutrinos, produced by the most energetic phenomena in our Galaxy and in the Universe, carry complementary (if not exclusive) information about the Cosmos with respect to photons. While the small interaction cross section of neutrinos allows them to come from the core of astrophysical objects, it is also a draw...
متن کاملProbing Grand Unified Theories with Cosmic Ray , Gamma - Ray and Neutrino Astrophysics
We explore scenarios where the highest energy cosmic rays are produced by new particle physics near the grand unification scale. Using detailed numerical simulations of extragalactic nucleon, γ-ray, and neutrino propagation, we show the existence of an interesting parameter range for which such scenarios may explain part of the data and are consistent with all observational constraints. A combi...
متن کاملProbing New Physics with Astrophysical Neutrinos
We review the prospects for probing new physics with neutrino astrophysics. High energy neutrinos provide an important means of accessing physics beyond the electroweak scale. Neutrinos have a number of advantages over conventional astronomy and, in particular, carry information encoded in their flavor degree of freedom which could reveal a variety of exotic neutrino properties. We also outline...
متن کاملRadio Detection of UHE-Neutrinos: Cosmic Tracers of the High Energy Universe
Identifying the sources of the highest energy cosmic rays is a fundamental unsolved problem in both high-energy physics and astrophysics. Ultra-high energy (UHE) neutrinos provide a key probe to the nature and location of cosmic ray engines since they travel essentially unimpeded from their source to our solar system, providing a directional tracer of their origin. The first generation of UHE n...
